After a two-year run with "Lego Dimensions," publisher Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has announced that the toys-to-life adventure game will not receive any further expansions.
A joint Twitter post from Warner Bros., developer TT Games and The Lego Group said, "We will not be producing new expansion packs for the game beyond what is now available."
The game's creators also thanked fans for their support, saying, "From building and rebuilding to the most bricktacular mash-ups, the Multiverse would be nothing without our amazing community."
"Lego Dimensions," which was launched in September 2015 for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Wii U, Xbox 360 and Xbox One, was promised to have a solid three-year run. With its impressive lineup of properties, some critics deemed it the game to beat in the toys-to-life genre.
The past two years reportedly saw "Lego Dimensions" getting all the attention from TT Games. Its massive scope made it difficult to organize for the creators but very entertaining for the players.
Moreover, it was rumored earlier this year that the game would be ending its run after just two seasons. Bricks to Life reported in March that according to sources, the game's developers decided to cancel its third season due to slow sales as well as an endless development cycle. From being the top priority, the arrival of more promising projects reportedly pushed the game to the end of the line.
Despite the warning, this news comes as a sad blow to the many toys-to-life fans. For two years, "Lego Dimensions" delighted players with characters from various cartoons, television shows and movies. Its long list of properties includes "The Lord of the Rings," "Harry Potter," "The Simpsons," "Ghostbusters," "Jurassic World" and "Scooby Doo," among many others.
It definitely had the most diverse properties in the genre, helping it outlive other toys-to-life games like "Disney Infinity" and "Skylanders," which is currently on hiatus.
Existing players need not worry, however, as TT Games promised that it will continue to provide on-going server and customer support. It added that existing packs will continue to work and will still be available for purchase.
