'League of Legends' December 2016 map update: Winter-themed update for Summoner's Rift returning after half a decade

It looks like it will be a little frosty next month in the Summoner's Rift as the longstanding "League of Legends" map is getting a winter makeover.

For the first time in half a decade, developer Riot Games is officially bringing back the winter version of the map, which was last seen back in the year 2011. Before that, Riot Games released a winter version in "League of Legends" back in 2009 and 2010.

Fans who have been around a while will know how it works, but the winter update should be something new for fans who only got into the multiplayer online battle arena video game after the said years.

The winter-themed "League of Legends" update will add a blanket of snow all over Summoner's Rift and will even have the monsters don some Christmas and winter garb to withstand the cold weather.

The articles of clothing to be added include mittens, scarves, and even a Santa hat. From the looks of it, each and every baddie and heroes will dress up for the season. Fans can get a look at the snow-covered map in a video by YouTuber Brofresco.

There is no word at the moment when exactly the winter season will arrive in Summoner's Rift for "League of Legends" as the update is still at the alpha stage, so there is a long way to go. But obviously, since it is a winter theme, a December rollout is likely.

In other news, "League of Legends" players get "extra supports" in Free Champion Rotation. "Starting on Tuesday, Nov 15, we're trying something a little different by adding ten support champs to the free champion rotation (for a total of 20)," Riot stated on its blog post.

The champs will include Blitzcrank, Brand, Braum, Janna, Leona, Nami, Sona, Taric, Thresh and Zyra, who will all be available for four weeks. The rest of the rotation continues as normal.

"This is basically a little experiment to see if giving players free access to a broader pool of supports improves queue times," Riot explained.
