Google Talk to shut Feb.16; top 5 alternatives

Google Hangouts Google

Users accustomed to the user interface and features of GTalk may have to look for another messaging app or service as Google Talk will bid goodbye on Feb. 16. Google's messaging service will finally embrace Hangouts.

It started last year when GTalk became unavailable for download and users were redirected to the Hangouts download page instead, although the company still supported the application's features. However, Google will no longer support the app starting Feb. 16.

Hangouts tried to offer phone calls, SMS, messaging and video conferencing, but GTalk is more popular than Hangouts. Moreover, it works better in slow connections. So, for those who are looking for options apart from Hangouts, the following are the top five alternative messaging apps. Some messaging apps sync different messaging services in one place.

1. Trillian

Trillian is a chat client that allows users to access Skype, Google Talk, MSN, AIM, etc. in one place. Moreover, it shows the feeds from one's Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn profiles. Trillian syncs desktop and mobile conversations.

2. Adium

For those using Mac OS X, Adium is a free messaging app that supports a myriad of chat clients such as AIM, MSN, Jabber, Yahoo and Google Talk. This app connects all of the messages in one account.

3. Apple Messages/iChat

Apple Messages, also dubbed as iChat, enables Mac users to send messages, pictures, videos and files to Mac and iOS users. This also allows users to exchange messages with Google Talk, Yahoo and AIM contacts.

4. Pidgin

Pidgin is the perfect messaging client for persons who have multiple accounts in various services. The app for Windows supports 16 different chat networks such as GTalk and AIM.

5. IMO

Similar to Trillian, IMO supports various chat clients like Skype, Yahoo messenger and Google Talk. It also has a user friendly interface that makes it easier for users to use.
