With Sarah Essen dead and the crime in the city continuing to expand, Gordon and the team will welcome a new captain that will lead them in wiping out the underworld for good. This individual is Captain Nathaniel Barnes and fans will see him on duty in the next "Gotham" season 2 episode.
Played by Michael Chiklis, the new captain will bring together a law-abiding task force to contain the folly in the episode titled "Strike Force." Many have died trying to save Gotham but as Harvey says in the trailer, the city "doesn't have straight lines. Only twists and turns and dead ends."
It remains to be seen if Barnes will be able to pull off such dangerous mission. The promo for the "Gotham" season 2 episode reveals that he has chosen Gordon as his second-in-command right after making sure that he is a troublemaker.
For now, he is being established as an agent of good, one who shares the same goal with Gordon about cleaning up the beloved city. Chiklis, however, hinted that there's a possibility that he might undergo a change of heart.
"The potential of it is exciting because it really could go in any direction, especially considering what we just shot," Chiklis told Entertainment Weekly. The actor teased that fans will learn more about Barnes in "Gotham" season 2 episode 9, which he said is "a really revealing episode."
As Penguin tries to determine the dark future of Gotham in his hands and gets busy with helping out Galavan in exchange for his fellow bad guy's help regarding gaining the respect he believes he ought to have, Barnes and the GCPD devise their plan to take them out.
However, Gordon will find himself at odds when he realizes that Barnes is planning to bring down Penguin, who helped him keep his job. In the past "Gotham" season 2 episodes, Penguin has risen to become the most powerful criminal in the city.
It is unclear what Gordon will do knowing that he is in a way indebted to the leading criminal around.
And it looks like Penguin will enjoy the spotlight in the upcoming episodes with the baddie's father to be played by Paul Reubens on the way.
