Aside from money and bragging rights, there will be one more thing at stake when Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao face off this coming May 2, 2015 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
At the conclusion of their match, the winner will be gaining additional prestige and this is with regards to the vacant World welterweight champion in the eyes of the Transnational Boxing Ratings Board.
At the moment, the king of the heavyweight and welterweight divisions are vacant but as far as the latter is concerned, that should be amply filled up by May. The Transnational Boxing Ratings Board is a panel established in 2012 in response to the decline of the Ring Ratings Panel. The panel is composed of Springs Toledo, Tim Starks and Cliff Rold.
Both Mayweather and Pacquiao have had their moments of fame but for the TBRB, there can only be one. And as long as both are active, the true champion can never be proclaimed just yet.
This adds more color to the May 2 encounter, the winner of which will gain the ample bragging rights and who truly is the best in the welterweight division. The said division has been vacant for seven years now.
Mayweather originally gained the nod (via Boxingscene.com) but all that was because Manny Pacquiao seemed to have gone in a different direction. Mayweather faced off against Shane Mosley which he eventually won while Pacquiao pummeled Antonio Margarito. Now with both fighters on a collission course, the one true welterweight champion will finally be known.
Now however, the scenario is different and with Mayweather and Pacquiao colliding this coming May. Finally after seven years of being vacant, the true champion for the welterweight division will be known.
