
The much-anticipated western release of the new anime film "Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F'" opened strongly in U.S. theaters.
According to the post released by anime company FUNimation, the film had a limited release in 894 theaters across the United States. On its opening day, the film grossed over $1.97 million at the box office. According to Michael DuBoise, EVP and COO of FUNimation, the movie's official distributor, the strong opening day exceeded even their most conservative expectations.
He stated, "We are thrilled with the overwhelmingly positive fan response to the movie. We knew the opening would be very good but its performance has exceeded everyone's expectations."
David Wengrod, VP of Theatrical Distribution for FUNimation, agreed, saying, "This film is a resounding victory on all levels."
Wengrod also stated that properly building up the hype for the film is the biggest factor for their success, adding, "The combination of our careful choice of release dates, an enticing marketing campaign that theaters embraced and fans universally accepted, and all of the great reviews added up to a terrific opening for us."
Due to its strong opening, "Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F'" immediately ranked as the 8th highest anime opening of all time. In addition, the movie is the only limited release anime film to make it to the Top 10. Meanwhile, the movie also landed as the top Average Per Screen, coming in with an average of more than $2,198, for the current Top 10 movies showing in the U.S. and placed as the 6th in gross earnings against all box office gross for major studio releases.
"Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F'" follows Son Goku and the rest of the Z warriors as they face the threat of a revived, vengeful, and more powerful Freeza. Goku must do his best and exceed his limits as a Saiyan in order to battle against the resurrected villain.
