Destiny's Child's Michelle Williams: 'If the thoughts that enter your mind don't bring peace, it ain't God'

Michelle Williams shares her journey to recovery.

Former Destiny's Child member Michelle Williams has come a long way since her battle with depression back in 2012, and she believes people who are going through the same thing need God just as much, if not more, than professional help.

"If the thoughts that enter your mind don't bring peace, happiness, joy, think on those things that are from above," she said during an episode of Lift Every Voice. "If they're not going to take you above, that's not of God. So you need to shake yourself and say 'Boo, get out of your feelings, because it's you. That ain't God.'"

Williams recalled that when she was younger, she thought that she was just going through growing pains. She thought that she simply liked being by herself, but there were things that hurt and disappointed her in the past that she carried into adulthood.

She neglected the issue for years, until she finally accepted that she needed both God and professional help to recover from certain situations.

For Williams, the answer lies in letting go of things that have hurt and moving on to better things. "A lot of us aren't living to our full God given potential. Let's get free from hurt that was probably done to you in the past," she urged.

Williams' fourth album, Journey to Freedom has received several award nominations since its release last year and the album narrates her emotional struggles and how she overcame them.

"How much more transparent can I be with consumers to let them know the process to being free from whatever is keeping you from being your best, whether that's procrastination, the wrong relationships or low self esteem? What can we do to get free from that and really live good healthy lives?" she said about the album.
