'Criminal Minds' season 10 spoilers: A familiar face returns in episode 22 'Protection'

"Criminal Minds" season 10 is drawing to a close although its penultimate episode may not be as haunting as episode 21, wherein a criminal used mind control for his nasty schemes, but rather something in the show's familiar territory.

The synopsis for the new episode titled "Protection" tells how the BAU goes after a psychopath who runs amok, shooting people in the Los Angeles area. Derek Morgan calls the new Unsub a "moral enforcer" who never really cares who is at the end of his gun.

The madness this brings initiates the beginning of the end of the season for "Criminal Minds." Showrunner Erica Messer revealed to Zap2it that "we're not doing a two-hour finale this year but the end of episode 22 will have a cliffhanger that will play out in episode 23, which is our finale this year."

Furthermore, Messer plans to end season 10 by bringing back the proverbial baddie the BAU dueled during the first episode of the season.

"We will bring back the creepy, Internet stalker guy from the premiere. That story will be tied together," Messer revealed.

While Messer took time to assure the show's fans that no major character will be killed off in the remaining episodes of season 10, she divulged that the finale will be "a very heavy episode for Kate." How that will unfurl remains to be seen.

Fans will also be treated to a thrilling guest-starring stint of an alum from "The Mentalist." From being FBI Agent Jason Wylie in the aforementioned series, Joe Adler reaches the shores of "Criminal Minds" as Danny Lee Watson.

"Criminal Minds" season 10 episode 22 "Protection" will air on April 29.
