The season 5 finale of the hit NBC action-drama television series "Chicago Fire" left everyone with a massive cliffhanger, with the same question looming in everyone's minds. Will Casey (Jesse Spencer) and the rest of the Firehouse 51 firefighters make it out alive in the massive warehouse fire?
Thankfully, the season 6 premiere addressed the issue quite quickly. The first episode of "Chicago Fire" season 6 picked right where season 5 left off, with Severide (Taylor Kinney), Herrmann (David Eigenberg), Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo), Casey, and the rest of the team shown safe and sound in the first few minutes of the episode.
Still, everyone's hearts pumped quite hard when the first episode revealed Casey to be the last one to be found and looking quite dead. Showrunner Derek Haas recently teased that "not everyone will come back," and with the next scene cutting to what looks like a funeral for Casey, the series' avid fans were all ready to explode with frustration.
Thankfully, it was all a massive fake-out, with Casey revealed to be quite alive and the apparent funeral turned out to be an awarding ceremony for Casey. Speaking about the scene with TV Line, Haas said: "I showed it to my mom, and watching her go through the range of emotions was very funny for me to watch live and in person."
"The medal ceremonies look curiously like memorial ceremonies, and so we thought, "Oh, we could really, really drive our audience crazy. Especially in that 15 seconds where, based on what Boden's saying about the life of Matthew Casey, [if] they think, "Oh, holy s—t, they did it!" then we've done our jobs," he added.
It proved to be a lot for some of the show's fans, with Twitter blowing up with all kinds of reactions about last Tuesday's premiere. Still, there is a still a lot to look forward to in the new season, and according to Haas, there is still a lot more drama and emotionally-gripping scenes waiting to be revealed, so fans should not miss a single episode.
