Catholics, pro-lifers call on Canadian bishops to halt abortion funding

Catholic international pro-life groups have called on the Canadian Conference of Bishops to cease funding for groups promoting abortion in Latin America.

An investigation by LifeSiteNews found that the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace (CCODP) has been donating hundreds of thousands of dollars to pro-abortion groups in Mexico. According to LifeSiteNews, the CCODP does not deliberately fund pro-abortion groups but is also not concerned if groups receiving funding go against Church teaching.

The revelations have shocked Catholic and pro-life groups. Human Life International (HLI), the Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute (CFAM) and the Latin American Alliance for the Family (ALAFA) have all called for the Bishops of Canada to end funding for pro-abortion groups.

Austin Ruse, President of CFAM, said, "I find it shocking …The Church in Mexico is under great pressure on the abortion question. To think the Church in Canada undercuts this by funding pro-abortion groups is despicable … Somebody should be fired," reports LifeSiteNews.

Christine de Vollmer, President of ALAFA asked if, "the CCODP really understands what development is all about … I am sure the Mexican Bishops have not been consulted. Do the Canadians ignore the fact that you cannot build development unless you respect basic human rights? This is imperialistic meddling at its worst!"

Fr Tom Euteneuer, President of HLI, called on the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops to cut all funding to pro-abortion groups.
