'Beauty and the Beast' updates: Season 3 to premiere in May, show picked up early for season 4

"Beauty and the Beast" is months away from starting its third season but it has already been renewed for season 4. Fans feared that the quests of their favorite beast are drawing to a close knowing that the series is garnering less and less viewership. Even season 2 was already crafted to tie everything in a bow. Still, the show was picked up for two more seasons, with season 4 filming to begin in June.

Along with the promise of more monsters and mysteries is a more intense romance between Cat and Vincent. It looks like the two can finally turn their attention to their growing feelings for each other now that Muirfield no longer has them in its clutch. Even so, perils and their inevitable appearances are bound to confront their relationship as they continue on.

As their love continues to develop, the pair will have to get to the bottom of a conspiracy that uses innocents as lab rats to explore the "boundaries of the impossible." This spells trouble for Vincent, who will have to unleash the beast inside him to tackle the newfound enemies.

The renewal of the show came to many as a surprise as season 2 earned such low ratings and netted only one million viewers. However, TV Guide reported that The CW president Mark Pedowitz believes that it is only right to reward the show's ardent fans. Pedowitz also plans to a big summer expansion and it seems that he is counting on "Beauty and the Beast" to carry that out.

Early renewals from The CW include "Arrow," "The Flash," "Jane the Virgin," "Reign," "Supernatural," "The 100," "The Vampire Diaries" and "The Originals."

"Beauty and the Beast" stars Kristin Kreuk as Cat and Jay Ryan as Vincent. Its long list of executive producers includes Brad Kern, Bill Haber, Paul J. Witt, Tony Thomas, Ron Koslow, Frank Siracusa and John Weber. Sherri Cooper and Jennifer Levin serve as the show's consultants.

Season 3 of "Beauty and the Beast" will premiere on May 21.
