Samsung Galaxy S3 owners still in the dark after S4 users in Russia receive Android Lollipop 5.0 update

It is unclear what Samsung plans for its older devices with regard to Android Lollipop although the South Korea-based tech giant is reportedly looking to gussy up the Samsung Galaxy S4 and Galaxy S3 with Google's new operating system. When the company will do that remains as the missing puzzle piece.

But there are reports that owners of the 2013 flagship smartphone in Russia have received Android Lollipop, particularly the variant that houses an Exynos processor and carries the model number GT-I9500. The sweet update on the handset will land at certain markets, at least for now, and Russia is the first to get hit by Google's newest operating system.

Samsung Galaxy S4 users are advised to clear up 3 GB of memory on the device before installing the update as it will come in a hefty 1.05 GB size. Another important thing to note here is that apps like Google Play, Books and Movies will be deleted along the way. This is to give way to memory optimization, which is part of the process in transitioning to Lollipop. Users can download these apps once more after the Lollipop makeover so no need to worry.

On the other hand, those who still rock the 2012 Samsung flagship have not been endowed with the update yet. Unfortunately, Samsung has not said a word about Lollipop going for the Samsung Galaxy S3. For now, S3 users still rely on a custom Android 5.0.2 Lollipop CyanogenMod 12-based Resurrection Remix ROM especially tailored to work on the model Galaxy S3 I9300. IB Times has detailed the process on how to successfully execute that. CyanogenMod also has something for users of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 LTE N9005. Team Android wrote a walkthrough on how to exploit the Nightly version of the custom ROM.

Christian Post notes that it may take time for Samsung to bring Android Lollipop to the Samsung Galaxy S3. Samsung is not only busy with its flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S5, but it is also avoiding potential dissatisfied users.
