Android 6.0 M release date rumors: Nexus 4, 10 and 7 could remain on Android 5.0 Lollipop

Android M Google

The good news is that Google is on the brink of release a new Android M update soon but the sad news is that it may not cover older devices which could mean that devices such as the Nexus 4, 10 and 7 will remain on Android Lollipop.

Apparently there is a new ruling in play and such could be devastating for folks who are not pat on the current Android Lollipop performance for their said device.

Under the new scheme, Nexus devices will receive major system update for a period of two years. The consolation is that as far as security updates, the time frame is bumped by a year (three years) via the Google Play Store meaning Nexus 4, 7 and 10 owners can still look forward to a security update which could possibly be the last one under the Nexus line of devices.

So as it stands now, it will be a game of numbers as far as Android updates are concerned. Hence, for devices that came out in 2012 (N4 and N10), the reality is that they may look forward only to security updates and not an OS update.

Only the N7 stands to receive a system update, having been released in 2013. This means that the N7 will still get the update this Summer and security patches in early 2016.

All these stand as rumors and for Nexus device owners, you can more or less gauge if you have something to look forward to when the Android M is released.

If goes according to schedule (which according to most is practically a certainty), the announcement could be made at the Google I/O.

The new Google update policy is certain to draw a lot of criticism, especially the ones who are not sold on the performance of the Android Lollipop and its slew of issues.
