Verizon LG G3 receives Android 5.0 update, Nexus 4 gets Android 5.1 Lollipop

The newest build of the Android operating system, Android 5.1 Lollipop, has been rolled out to Nexus 4 smartphones, while the 5.0 version has recently become available to Verizon subscribers who have the LG G3.

Those who rock the Nexus 2012 flagship will be getting the 5.1 Lollipop treatment over the air. Despite the device's age, it is still among the first to get the latest build of the firmware as it is part of the Nexus family, which always gets updates first.

The newest build is 174.5 MB, and with that not-so-hefty size are some much-need bug fixes such as tweaks on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth settings, and a new and improved quick-settings menu. With the Android 5.1 update, it will also be easy to manage notifications with the new Interruptions feature found in the Priority profile settings. Also, users can enjoy clearer calls with the new HD Voice feature. Lastly, the new Device Protection feature will lock out anyone who steals the phone from the owner as factory reset will require Google account login information to get into the handset. The update is sent out over the air so it will not be seeded in one fell swoop, thus Nexus 4 users have to wait a little more.

Meanwhile, Verizon has finally started to roll out the 5.0 version of the OS to LG G3 owners using its network. The carrier is the last to bring out the update, which bears the new Material Design with vibrant animations and colors, to the LG flagship. Furthermore, Verizon users with the LG G3 can finally see how Android 5.0 makes managing notifications easier and how it enhances security on the handset with Smart Lock, which lets users lock and unlock the LG G3 with gestures or facial recognition.

The update for the LG G3 is done in phases as well, but users can expect to receive a notification when it is ready for download. But if there isn't one yet, it wouldn't hurt to check manually by going to Settings -> About Device -> System Updates -> Check For Updates.
