The Android 5.1 Lollipop OS update is set to be released in March, according to an innuendo by HTC's Vice President for Production Management Mo Versi. The executive took to Twitter suggesting the big reveal of the major OS update soon.
"It'll be tied to Google's next MR, which is in March," reads Versi's tweet.
MR stands for Maintenance Release, which also means minor release and maintenance pack. This also means that a product will receive an update without added features or content. This type of update usually serves to resolve minor problems, bugs, as well as security issues.
Although Versi is not overseeing Android's development in Google, HTC is one of the OEMs that are first in line in receiving OS updates.
Some of the improvements expected to come with Android 5.1 are better RAM management, Welcome Silent Mode that allows users to quiet down the device, OK Google that comes with voice command, as well as quick settings and security updates. It will reportedly give users options to screen PIN lock, pattern lock, or a general lock toggle. The Quick Settings panel provides easy access to some features such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
Previous reports stated that Android 5.1 will be rolled out in February. The upcoming Android 5.1 Lollipop OS is purported to be a major system update similar to the upgrade found in Jelly Bean OS. The new operating system was also seen in low cost Android One devices in Indonesia, which means it will arrive in Nexus devices soon.
In November, Google rolled out the official version of Android 5.0 Lollipop OS plagued with bugs and issues, but the company releases OS updates to fix the problems. The Android 5.0.1 and the Android 5.0.2 were spotted in Nexus 7 tablets.
