A victory by Amir Khan over Chris Algieri will certainly improve his chances of potentially facing off against Floyd Mayweather Jr. next. If he does pass this hurdle, that fight could be in September.
It will be recalled that Mayweather has announced he will be fighting again in September, potentially the last fight of his career before he officially hangs up his gloves. With Pacquiao out of the picture, Khan looms as a likely opponent.
Of course, this is not the first time that a Khan vs. Mayweather tiff is being cooked up. Last year, the two would have faced off in May of 2014. However, Mayweather chose to rule out Khan and faced Marcos Maidana instead.
Now however, all that could change especially if Khan successfully defeats Algieri. Anything less than a solid win though could immediately bring the end to any conversations about a Khan vs Mayweather fight, and the champ could instead consider another fighter, Saul Canelo Alvarez.
One thing going for Khan is that Floyd Mayweather Sr., the father of the undefeated American boxer, finds a supposed final fight with Khan feasible. Harsh as it may sound, Mayweather Sr. believes that Khan would be an easier fight compared to what they had to go through with Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao.
In fact, Khan revealed that he was approached by the general manager of Mayweather after the fight, telling him that they should get it on this year. Khan was on hand to witness Mayweather's unanimous decision win over Pacquiao at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
However, Chris Algieri may have other plans. The former mixed martial arts practitioner has nothing to loss and is obviously under less pressure, so Khan needs to get his head into their upcoming May 29 fight and win convincingly.
And for Khan, he knows he has to keep his focus in check and think about Mayweather once their bout in New York is done.
