'Narcos' season 2 premiere date set for August 2016?

Narcos Netflix

"Narcos" season 1 was such a critical hit that on its second week after premiering on Netflix, the network officially green lit a second season. However, despite the high reviews and viewer ratings, the second season is reportedly going to wait and release a full year later, launching in August 2016.

Fans speculated that because there have been a few casting updates such as Eric Lange joining in and with production set to begin soon, it would follow that season 2 would be given a summer 2016 release. However, this does not appear to be the case and season 2 will instead premiere in August, sharing the same release window as season 1.

However, there may be a need for shuffling the schedule a bit given that Netflix will see the launch of several new shows such as the Marvel series' "Luke Cage," "Daredevil" season 2, "Iron Fist" and more. Netflix will also have to give room to launch other series such as "Orange is the New Black" season 4.

It is important to note that this is still based on speculation and that Netflix has yet to announce an official launch date for the second season. Given that season 1 launched its episodes this past Aug. 28, it is expected that season 2 may follow suit and release on Aug. 26, 2016.

Lange will be joining in as CIA agent Stechner, who will be sent in as the CIA's official hand in assisting DEA agent Javier Peña (Pedro Pascal) in investigating and capturing infamous drug lord Pablo Escobar (Wagner Moura). At this point, however, no further casting update has been announced.

As previously reported, Netflix has not yet announced what season 2 would focus on but given that season 1 ended circa 1992 with Escobar about to be arrested and kept in the La Catedral prison, season 2 may focus on his big armed breakout and the eventual manhunt that leads to his death in 1993.
