Frankie Edgar is a familiar name in the featherweight division but his stock just got a big boost when he impressively defeated Chad Mendes via knockout at TUF 22 at The Chelsea at The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas last Friday.

Thanks to a brutal left kick he landed on Mendes, Edgar has gained the attention of critics, although that stint could depend on which direction the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) opts to go. Prior to UFC 194, MMA Junkie bares that Edgar could be lined up for a title shot, although the final word will be at the hands of Dana White.

This comes in the lift of Conor McGregor's stunning triumph over Jose Aldo in just 13 seconds, making him the undisputed UFC featherweight title at UFC 194 recently.

The tiff was expected to carry a lot of fireworks but the quick finish suddenly brings up questions on which fight would be better — McGregor against Aldo or Edgar?

Edgar is hopeful that he will get the nod, although McGregor has said he would be giving Aldo a rematch, as reported by the Daily Mail.

But that was McGregor speaking on his end and not the UFC (or White). Depending on what happens moving forward, Edgar is still in the race, with the match possibly happening at UFC 198 this coming April 2016.

Regardless, Edgar seems to have conditioned himself to be McGregor's next opponent. So in the event that he is made to wait, he does not hide the fact that such would be a big disappointment on his end.

"I'd be floored," he said via MMA Junkie. "That's what I'm hoping doesn't happen. Fingers crossed."

If so, it would be Edgar's second shot at the title. He had previously lost to Aldo at UFC 156 back in 2013 but via unanimous decision. Had Aldo won, it would have been a chance for him to gain sweet revenge for that loss.
