McDreamy may no longer be back but Meredith and the rest of the Grey Sloan Hospital doctors will be. ABC has announced the renewal of the long-running medical drama for season 12 while inviting everyone to tune in to the finale of its game-changing season on Thursday, May 14.

There is not much clue about how it will all end this season but it looks like Derek's memory will be put to rest soon. The doctors are bound to go on with an "unfathomable crisis" in their hands, which, in turn, will help them realize "what is important" and eventually be "brought closer together."

Fans found it extremely difficult to move on when Dr. Derek Shepherd passed away. The character has been in every "Grey's Anatomy" season and his death, although foreseen, was still hard to believe when it actually happened.

The season 11 finale, as TV Fanatic noted, is writer Shonda Rhimes' way of saving the show. Carter Matt says that the ratings of the series have declined significantly after the episode that laid down actor Patrick Dempsey's exit from the show.

Moreover, it looks as if the series is being crafted to move on quickly from Derek's passing. TV Fanatic says that the mourning for McDreamy's heroic death was almost skipped and the addition of Meredith's baby girl into the picture clouds the moment even more.

Up until now, it is difficult to see past the fact that Derek Shepherd is no more. After the show's twists and turns, "Grey's Anatomy" has become more unpredictable and this "unpredictability" might just be the reason season 12 is here, and that fans should keep their eyes peeled for it. Besides, the medical drama remains as one of ABC's top shows despite its dwindling ratings.

There is still no information about the premise or premiere date of season 12, but details should be unveiled soon. For now, fans can catch the season 11 finale of "Grey's Anatomy" on May 14.
