The overall premise of FOX's science fiction television series "Wayward Pines" seems to become more mysterious after each episode. Now that the series is set to receive its third season, fans are now more eager to further delve into the lives of the last remaining humans and to know more about their chances of survival.

The series itself is based on the novels of the same title written by Blake Crouch, which started out as a collaborative project by the author along with M. Night Shyamalan, and "Stranger Things" creators Ross and Matt Duffer. With all the creative minds at work, the series has so far evolved into quite a riveting story about a strange future that all starts in the small town of Wayward Pines, Idaho.

The third season is expected to showcase the last of the human population waking up to a world filled with evolved Abbies, a race of genetically mutated humans who have turned into vicious carnivores. Despite the focus on the character's fight against the creatures, Crouch had revealed that the brand new season will focus on exploring the nature of the last humans as they face the possible extinction of their species.

This is of course an entirely different focus from the past two seasons. The first season mainly focused on the secretive town and the relationships of the lead characters which includes Dr. Theo Yedlin (Jason Patric), Sheriff Ethan Burke (Matt Dillon), his wife Theresa (Shannyn Sossamon), and their son Ben (Charlie Tahan).

The second season was then described by Shyamalan as an exposition of the entire situation and of the Abbies themselves. It outlined the chain of events that had led to their evolution and of the predicament humanity must now deal with.

FOX has yet to officially announce the third season's release date, but reports have speculated that the new season should be airing sometime next year.
