'The Vampire Diaries' season 7 spoilers, plot news: Enzo to team up with Lily and the Heretics?

Enzo helped Lily free her vampire friends, but his bond with the Salvatore matriarch doesn't end there. "The Vampire Diaries" season 7 will plunge into their relationship and Enzo's potential into becoming a bad guy and on an opposing side against Stefan and Damon.

Executive producer Caroline Dries said that the Salvatore brothers feel like Lily "has this whole other family." And with Enzo being a "free agent," he will find himself hanging out more with Lily and her heretic family. This will make Stefan and Damon question the goings-on.

"And they're like: 'What's going on here?' There's a real 'us vs. them' mentality and the Heretics are the bad guys - and Lily and Enzo are friends with the bad guys," Dries explained during an interview with Seat4F.

This will certainly strain Enzo's bond with Damon in season 7.

Meanwhile, executive producer Julie Plec had a lot to say when asked about how much time will have passed from the season 6 finale to the new season. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, she revealed that "we're actually picking up all over the place."

"We're picking up a little bit in the future, we're picking up a lot in the future, we're doing a little bit of a time shuffle as we launch into the season," she said. "One timeline is set very much in the future and the other timeline will catch us up to the events of the final scene of last season."

That said, the new season will have a lot of things happening all at once, with Damon moving on from Elena, Stefan becoming a hero and a partner to Caroline, the rise of the new enemy, and the change of heart of a good friend.

"The Vampire Diaries" season 7 airs starting Oct. 8.
