Even avid "True Detective" fans agree that the show had a less-than-perfect performance last season. As such, coupled with the new HBO shows around, people are wondering whether or not the show will be canceled. Thankfully, several reports are saying that the show will be back for more, and that HBO is just taking its time to deliver a better third season to viewers.

According to the Ecumenical News, the reason behind the unanimous expert opinion of "True Detective" not being canceled is due to the fact that it is one of HBO's most groundbreaking shows. After all, the first ever season of the crime drama anthology earned a lot of positive reception and reviews from both fans and critics alike.

Furthermore, actors Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, and the creator of the series Nic Pizzolatto were honored with Emmy nominations thanks to their work on the show.

Unfortunately, the second season of the show failed to follow up the hype of its predecessor, but it still garnered some good ratings. As such, the rumors of the series getting canceled became rife after it ended, as well as the fact that HBO has not updated the fans about the third season of the series reinforcing the rumors.

However, according to the Christian Times, fans should not fear about the show's future as the new programming chief of HBO — Casey Bloys — hinted recently that the show will possibly return. The assurance is pretty solid, but it could only mean that the third season of "True Detective" will come somewhere in the future.

Couple that with the fact that Nic Pizzolato was promoted to a supervisory role means that someone else will take over the writing of the third season of the show.

Regardless, a possible air date for the third season of the "True Detective" show will be around 2018.
