The last season's cliffhanger finale left fans excited for the next installment, particularly since it did not reveal the answer to the questions about Jack Pearson's (Milo Ventimiglia) upcoming death. Fortunately, the premiere of "This Is Us" season 2 gave a hint as to how the character will die.
Ever since the confirmation that Jack will face death in the second season, fans have been wondering how it will take place. In the first episode of the new installment, Rebecca (Mandy Moore) saw their house being burned down. This incident apparently implied to the viewers that the house fire will likely be the cause of Jack's demise.
To give light to the issue, series creator Dan Fogelman sat down with Variety to discuss the impending death of the male lead character and the house fire scene in the premiere episode. He said, "Did he die in the fire? Did he get out of the fire? But we're not misdirecting. He didn't die four years later."
The showrunner further added, "We flash forward to the day Jack died, and what you're seeing there is the day and night and little pieces that come into play. So you're seeing a lot of things that will reveal themselves in the course of the season." While Fogelman did not give a definitive answer to the question about the patriarch's death, Ventimiglia also dropped a few details that will surely excite everyone.
The actor shared that a lot of people came to him to ask about Jack and his demise. He then quipped in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, "So, I still have not escaped the question, but I think at least people feel like we're on the road to resolution — or on the road to understanding how is that Jack died, and how this burned-down house is a part of it."
When asked if Jack really died in the fire, Ventimiglia was hesitant to confirm any of the speculations. He said that they were not the ones to lead fans astray, adding that the scene could be an indication of the death of the character or it could not.
He explained, "We're not into misleading people, but if we gave everybody everything right now, what would the [mystery] be about? ... I think everybody is wanting that itch scratched right now, and it's like, "Guys, be patient. It will happen when it's supposed to."
