While The CW's "The Vampire Diaries" is set to close the series at the end of its eighth season, it may not be the end of the road for the characters from Mystic Falls. Rumors say that many of the survivors are set to migrate to New Orleans to join the Mikaelsons in the "The Vampire Diaries" spinoff "The Originals."

Buzz has been high on the rumor mill that "The Originals" — which is set to premiere it's fourth season to replace "The Vampire Diaries" in its timeslot —  will feature a crossover from Alaric (Matt Davis) and perhaps Caroline (Candice Accola King), who once shared a romantic past with Klaus (Joseph Morgan).

Now, it is rumored that Nina Dobrev — who played Elena Gilbert and the vampire Katherine — in "The Vampire Diaries" will be joining "The Originals" cast for its fourth season. Dobrev left "TVD" when season 6 ended.

However, the rumors hinted that she will be playing another doppleganger instead of her original character so it will be interesting to see how that would play out given that she has yet to appear in Mystic Falls for the final season of "The Vampire Diaries."

As for reports of a crossover from Alaric, it is expected that the vampire will be dropping by New Orleans for a mission. He is expected to seek out Elijah (Daniel Gillies) to deliver a priceless artifact, but the purpose of the item is yet to be revealed.

In an interview with show creator and showrunner Julie Plec, she said that most of the decisions for the final season of "The Vampire Diaries" was also influenced by possibilities to continue on with "The Originals." She said that she wants to keep the show going in order to give the characters from Mystic Falls an avenue to continue their stories.

"I'd like to keep that show going and let anybody from The Vampire Diaries that wanted to drop over and visit, come over and play in that sandbox. I know a lot of us are very committed to keeping The Originals around," she said.
