'The Leftovers' season 2 premiere: The Garveys' life changes forever in 'Axis Mundi'

The Departure has left Jarden, Texas without a scratch last season and so when "The Leftovers" season 2 premieres Oct 4 with "Axis Mundi," viewers will see more and more people take refuge in the place, which has now been renamed Miracle for having inexplicably kept its dwellers safe from the plague that wiped out 2 percent of the world's population.

However, there's the threat that Miracle may not be so shielding soon. One of the new groups moving there is composed of Jill Garvey, Nora Durst and Kevin Garvey, the last of whom still struggles to move on from his past. John, who stays in the area with his wife Erika and their twins Evie and Michael, was warned by a so-called psychic about impending danger.

Kevin and John's family, who will show up in "The Leftovers" for the first time, suffer from the trauma of seeing many die because of the Departure. They may be past the worst, but they never really escaped the nightmare. Kevin and the Murphys are brought together by fate after "a mysterious event that will change their lives forever" happens in the season opener.

Meanwhile, those who are looking for answers about what caused the Departure and where it comes from aren't in luck. It looks like "The Leftovers" season 2 will continue to bring into play the effects of such a phenomenon and just shy away from thoroughly explaining what it really is. Fans can expect the show zero in on the survivors of last season's Departure instead of the Departure itself.

Even though it seems that "The Leftovers" season 2 has a foreboding premise, Entertainment Weekly says that it doesn't feel that way at all, at least when watching the opening credits for the new season. The publication says that the less dark tone of the opening credits could reflect the new season on the whole, too.

"The Leftovers" season 2 premiere "Axis Mundi" airs  Oct. 4 on HBO at 9 p.m. Alternatively, watch it online via live stream on HBO NOW.
