A look at what's available in the market these days will see two potential devices that aim to give users a mobile solution that is better than what traditional laptops or notebooks can provide.

This is with reference to Apple's iPad Pro and Microsoft's Surface Pro 4. The first one to hit the market was the Surface Pro 4 toward the end of October. But when November arrived, the iPad Pro came into the picture.

Of the two, it is evident that the Surface Pro 4 has been around since it is actually a successor to the Surface Pro 3. Comparing the two, it may all boil down to what the Surface Pro 4 and the iPad Pro bring that could woo in the consumer electronics buyers.

With the Microsoft Surface Pro 4, one can get a 12.3-inch PixelSense touch display (2763 x 1824 pixels at 267 dpi) with a choice a Core M3, i5 or i7. It has 4 GB of RAM that can be bumped up to 16 GB, with a choice of 128, 256, 512 GB and 1 TB storage.

The Surface Pro 4 comes with a battery that is good for up to nine hours when viewing videos, meaning it could last longer than that when using the device for simple tasks. It comes with connectivity options for WiFi and Bluetooth 4.0 and runs on Windows 10.

On the other end, the iPad Pro offers a slightly higher 12.9-inch Retina touch display (2732x 2046 pixels at 264 dpi) and runs on an Apple 64-bit A9X chip/M9 coprocessor, 4 GB of RAM, and 32 or 128 GB of internal storage. It does also have the usual WiFi but has a Bluetooth 4.2 instead. Other than that, it also comes with options for 4G LTE and HSPA+ and runs on iOS 9.

The cameras for both devices are practically similar (a rear 8-megapixel camera and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera). The specs for both are pretty close and eventually, it could all boil down to familiarity and, of course, price. The iPad Pro is something you can get starting at $800 while the Surface Pro 4 costs about $900 for the base model.

So in all, familiarity and purpose could be key. There are some who are used to the Microsoft environment while others more comfortable with the iOS.
