'Star Trek Discovery' spoilers, news: Bryan Fuller explains title

Star Trek Discovery CBS

"Star Trek Discovery" will launch soon on CBS and will be the first new show since "Star Trek Enterprise" left the air in 2005. During the Star Trek: Mission to New York event (via iO9), showrunner Bryan Fuller explained to the crowd how the new show got its name and what it signifies for the franchise.

Fuller also reveals that the Discovery is not just a single referrence but was drawn by several sources.

"Not the least of which is Stanley Kubrick's contribution to the Discovery on '2001: A Space Odyssey,' NASA's vessel the Discovery, and also the sense of discovery. What the word 'discovery' means to 'Star Trek' audiences who have been promised a future by Gene Roddenberry where we come together as a planet and seek new worlds and new alien races to explore and understand and collaborate with," he explained.

As stated in a report from Cinema Blend, the last portion of Fuller's statement are the most exciting as the showrunner did explain that "Star Trek Discovery" would be introducing many new alien races and gadgets into the franchise.

The "50 Years of Star Trek" documentary revealed how many real-world gadgets like the iPad and flip-phone have been inspired by gadgets on the series and it is speculated in the report that "Star Trek Discovery" will continue this tradition by introducing new gadgets that may become real one day.

Fuller also explained that all six previous series and the films have focused on the perspective of the captain but for "Star Trek Discovery" it would be an ensemble and the main character would be the ship's "Number One" officer, a female whose real name is still unknown.

This will coincide with Fuller's statement of the show's title, as it will discover a fresh new perspective in telling "Star Trek" stories.

"Star Trek Discovery" premieres in January 2017.
