Abbie's (Nicole Beharie) past will come back to haunt her in the form of her new boss in the third season of Fox's modern-day adaptation of Washington Irving's short story "Sleepy Hollow."
Entertainment Weekly reveals that Abbie's new superior in the upcoming installment is none other than her ex-lover, Daniel Reynolds (Lance Gross). The two were both recruits back in Quantico, where they were pitted against each other. The tension between them eventually resulted into a brief but passionate affair before they parted ways to pursue their careers four years ago.
Reynolds apparently went to become an FBI agent, while Abbie returned home to Sleepy Hollow to work under the Sheriff. In season 3, Reynolds is now in town to take over as the chief of the police department, which makes him Abbie's new boss. How will this twist affect Abbie's relationship with Crane (Tom Mison)? The situation is bound to be awkward, as the three will come in close contact with each other. Does Daniel still harbor feelings for Abbie?
Meanwhile, producer Alex Kurtzman told Give Me My Remote that the upcoming season will be focusing yet again on the tried and tested tandem of Crane and Abbie. He said that viewers will get to understand their relationship better, as well as the things that make them tick.
"Crane is going to be looking deep into his past for what his partnerships might have been during the Revolutionary War, and how that affects his relationship with Abbie now."
Kurtzman also revealed that one of the past characters might be returning, but he did not elaborate on who it could be. He likewise disclosed that a new mysterious enemy will be filling the gap that Headless had left from the previous season.
"There's going to be a new villain that people haven't seen before, who is going to bring a lot of havoc."
Aside from Gross, new faces are set to join the "Sleepy Hollow" cast this season. Nikki Reed will be playing Betsy Ross, while Shannyn Sossamon will appear as Pandora. Zach Appelman, who plays Sheriff Corbin's (Clancy Brown) son Joe, is now a regular cast member.
Sleepy Hollow's third season is set to premiere Thursday, Oct. 1, at 9 p.m. on Fox.
