At the end of the previous season, fans saw Josh Hartnett's Ethan Chandler finally surrender to the authorities, and Scotland Yard carted him off to be sent to America. This development will give way to one of the most intriguing questions since the start of "Penny Dreadful" – the identity of Ethan's father.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the upcoming third season will have fans see Brian Cox as Jared Talbot, the father of Ethan. The father has been trying to find his son and settle the score between them since the start of the series. However, aside from little information about his past, Ethan's father has not been seen since the show started.

The report also said that although Cox has already been confirmed to play the role, Jared Talbot won't be seen in the season premiere. Instead, fans will see the father in the middle of the season and will be highlighted in at least two episodes.

Meanwhile, Crossmap also detailed changes in the upcoming season's character lineup. According to the website, season 3 of "Penny Dreadful" will introduce Perdita Weeks as Catriona Hartdegan, who will lend a scholarly hand to the trio of Ethan, Sir Malcom Murray, and Vanessa. In addition, Shazad Latif will also be seen in the upcoming episodes as Dr. Henry Jekyll, and Christian Camargo as Dr. Alexander Sweet.

It is also rumored that Patti LuPone will come back for the third season, but as a different character. She will reportedly play an American therapist named Dr. Seward, and Samuel Barnett will be her secretary. LuPone was last seen in season 2 as the Cut-Wife.

Other new characters joining the fray will be Jessica Barden as Brona and Dorian Gray's acolyte, while Wes Studi will play Native American Kaetenay.

"Penny Dreadful" season 3 will return sometime next year.
