Oculus Rift vs Project Morpheus: Comparison of VR headsets

Sony's Project Morpheus Playstation Blog

This year's Electronic Entertainment Expo showcases future projects from tech giants, particularly in the gaming industry. One of the hottest topics in the convention and in the industry itself is the future of virtual reality in gaming.

Two bigwigs in the VR industry are staking their claims on VR headsets this early, although the consumer versions of their gears won't come out until next year. How would the Rift VR by Oculus and Project Morpheus by Sony fare against each other when it comes to gaming?

Design

One of the features of a good VR headset is its design. Gamers tend to use accessories for hours at a time, and a VR headset stuck to a user's head will test how good the design is based on the user's comfort levels.

Oculus already showed the final consumer version of the Rift, and first impressions suggest that it would be light enough to hold in one hand, the same with Project Morpheus when Sony demoed it at the Game Developers Conference 2015. For design, the Rift has added ventilations and cushions so users won't feel the sweat and heat when wearing the headset. Project Morpheus, on the other hand, seems to be a straight-up sleek headgear that takes the weight off the user's head.

Display

One of the aspects in which these VR headsets differ is the screen tech. Although both gears offer 1920 x 1080 pixel screens, Oculus Rift has a slight advantage over viewing angles, since it delivers 110-degree field of vision over Project Morpheus' 100-degree angle. This means that the Rift will allow the user to view a wider range of images. In addition, Oculus Rift uses OLED for its displays against Sony's LCD tech.

Release date

It has been reported that the Oculus Rift will ship out early next year, in the first quarter. Although Sony has not provided any concrete details on when gamers can expect Project Morpheus, it is speculated that it will arrive later than the Rift, with some observers saying that Sony is targeting a middle of the year release.
