NFL rumors Giants: will free agent Ryan Malleck make the final cut?

Undrafted free agent Ryan Malleck may have his work cut out for him to prove that he has what it takes to make it to the Giants' roster.

While his stats as a starter in Virginia Tech is impressive, CBS Sports analyst Dane Brugler said he hasn't been battle tested in terms of dynamic pass catching down the field.

Throughout his career, Maleck has caught 21 passes for 289 yards and produced two touchdowns for Virginia Tech. He finished his career with 62 catches, which he made in his final three seasons.

"Malleck started 32 games over his career at Virginia Tech, mostly inline as a dual-threat blocking and receiving tight end. He wasn't asked to be a dynamic pass-catcher down the field, but he has functional receiving traits for the next level, showing savvy, ball skills and toughness before and after the catch. Although he is a try-hard competitor, Malleck needs to refine his blocking mechanics to improve his reliability on the line of scrimmage and in space," he explained.

Compared to his competition, his size may or not become a problem. However, he can compensate for this by paying attention to details. And he has pretty strong competition -- Will Tye, Larry Donnell, Matt LaCosse, Will Johnson and Jerell Adams are jostling to be part of the team as well.

The sports analyst acknowledges that Malleck could still make it as a No. 3 tight end and special teamer if he continues to improve his game.

Another player waiting for a shot to get drafted by the Giants is running back Terron Beckham who recently attended the Jets' rookie minicamp in May, reported USA Today.

Beckham is a talented player even without playing college football and during his Pro Day at TEST, wherein he was checked out by members of the Jets, the Oakland Raiders and the New York Giants, he impressed scouts by running 4.49 seconds in the 40 as well 6.86 seconds in the 3-cone drill.

He was also asked to take the Wonderlic exam by the Giants which raised hopes that the team might have room for him in their lineup.
