Nick Young, also known for his Twitter name Swaggy P, has done a lot of crazy things lately; but be ready for something serious.
Everyone knows by now that Young is engaged to Iggy Azalea and the Lakers guard made his first trip to Australia recently. And from the looks of it, Swaggy P may have fallen in love with the country instantly, so much so that he is seriously considering joining the Australian basketball team.
Of course, this intent will have to go through a tedious process of naturalization, probably similar to what Andray Blatche underwent to receive naturalization for the Philippines. But the thing here is aside from the paper work, Young will have to satisfy a three-year residency first before being considered.
Assuming he does satisfy both counts, there is also no assurance yet that he will automatically be inserted in the roster. Summing it all up, Young's intent will come with a pretty big gamble.
Young has been the subject of trade rumors lately, although the Lakers have yet to seriously act on the matter. With the rise of Jordan Clarkson, the entry of D'Angelo Russell and the return of Kobe Bryant, Young has become sort of indispensable heading into the new season.
Could this be the reason why he wants to join Basketball Australia?
From the enumerated steps he has to undertake, it seems that the process won't be easy. He has to earn that said merit like anyone else on the team, not to mention the nod by coach Andrej Lemanis as well.
Should Young agree to the process, there is now the question of age. Now at 30, could team Australia still make do with a budding 30-year-old Young?
The fact is that Australia has its share of players in the NBA ranks. That includes Andrew Bogut who seems to be ecstatic with the idea. There are seven Aussies in the NBA right now and the numbers could swell all the more when players like Ben Simmons and Isaac Humphries wind up their college stints and join the pro ranks.
Given the massive number of Aussie players, could Young still have a place in the team in about three years?
