'Mirror's Edge 2' release date update: game rebranded as 'Mirror's Edge: Catalyst'

Contrary to what some fans have said, the upcoming iteration of the first-person title, "Mirror's Edge," will not be a direct sequel to its predecessor.

Taking a leaf off of the book of some of the big-name developers who have jumped the gun and revealed their biggest projects ahead of the Electronic Entertainment Expo next week, game giant Electronic Arts has already updated the official "Mirror's Edge" website to reflect the upcoming game.

In addition, an announcement via a blog post was also put up. Aside from confirming the release of the second installment, developer DICE also pointed out that the upcoming title is not a sequel or a re-hash of the original, but would instead be introducing a whole new story.

Senior producer Sara Jansson wrote, "The team has spent a lot of time re-evaluating every aspect of the game and making it a new experience. This is not a sequel, this is not Mirror's Edge 2."

Jansson then added that although it will introduce a new story, the upcoming title will still feature the original "Mirror's Edge" protagonist, Faith.

Jansson said, "We have landed on a vision that honors the first game — pushing the boundaries of first person movement and diving deeper into the story behind our heroine Faith — but also brings a lot of great new, interesting gameplay and features to the experience for our players."

Since DICE is stressing that it will not be a sequel, the upcoming game has been rebranded. Instead of it being known as "Mirror's Edge 2," it is now dubbed as "Mirror's Edge: Catalyst."

Other than the confirmation and general background on how the game will be laid out, no other details were released. However, it is rumored that as part of the company's presentation, "Mirror's Edge: Catalyst" will appear at this year's E3 event that would take place from June 16 to 18.
