Microsoft has just unveiled a slew of new devices in its different lineups, and with the new Lumia devices, tablets, and updates for the new Windows 10 platform already confirmed, some fans – particularly those in the gaming industry – are asking when the much-hyped Microsoft VR device will come out.

However, recent rumors have it that the price of the device might make the Microsoft HoloLens a little bit out of reach for the casual gamer.

According to a report by industry observer CNET, there is no word yet on when the Redmond-based giant will out the consumer version of the device. But it was revealed at Microsoft's Oct. 6 event that the developer version of the HoloLens will most likely ship out to different apps creators starting early next year.

Since the technology is much more advanced as the HoloLens can be used for augmented reality-based apps, the headgear's developer edition will reportedly cost around $3,000. This will put it at a disadvantage against other VR headsets, noted IBTimes. The price will place the HoloLens as a special equipment, rather than an accessory.

When the developer version launches early next year, it will be released alongside full consumer versions of three other VR headsets – the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and the recently revealed Gear VR by Samsung. In addition to the other three being full consumer editions, the price range for the gaming-optimized headsets will also prove to be a challenge for Microsoft – the Gear VR, for example, will reportedly launch as a $99 headset.

However, Microsoft noted that the HoloLens is not just for one industry but an all-encompassing headgear. Terry Myerson, executive vice president for Microsoft's Windows and Devices division, said when presenting the device: "Whether it's for productivity, health care, design, or entertainment, HoloLens creates experiences that aren't possible on any other device, or any other platform."
