'Marco Polo' season 3 release date, spoilers: 2017 release rumored for third season

Will Benedict Wong return as Kublai Khan in "Marco Polo" season 3? Netflix/Marco Polo

Despite the many challenges being faced by the Netflix show "Marco Polo" for a season 3 pickup, hope remains high that the show will be renewed.

Among the challenges being faced by the show is the huge budget that comes with producing it, given that the second season displayed some declining ratings and negative reviews, reported iTech Post.

There have also been reports that Benedict Wong — who plays Kublai Khan in the series — will no longer be joining the possible third season because he has recently become affiliated with Marvel's "Dr. Strange."

While early reports debunked the actor's departure from the show, it has recently been reported that the actor will not be joining the show anymore and will instead be replaced by another actor for the role.

Still, fans of the show are clinging to the hope that the rumors of his departure are untrue as showrunner John Fusco recently tweeted an image of Wong with the caption "We're not done, Monk. Me and you, we're not done."

Actress Olivia Cheng — who plays Lin Mei in the series —  also encouraged fans of the show to continue supporting it and rally for a possible season 3 renewal.

According to the Parent Herald, there is a rumor circulating that the show will air its third season in 2017. While there has been no official announcement from Netflix or its partner networks, fans have expressed excitement over the rumored release date rather than having none to work with at all.

Meanwhile, season 3 is expected to focus on a showdown between the mythical figure Prester John and Kublai Khan, which makes the character crucial for the upcoming season.

Marco Polo is also expected to embark on a new adventure away from Kublai Khan given that he will not stay with the latter's camp forever.
