Someone will turn up dead after the explosion in the midseason finale of the CBS series "Madam Secretary."

Creator Barbara Hall and executive producer Lori McCreary told Entertainment Weekly that the surprise ending last week was meant to take out one of the powerful leaders involved in the peace talks. Will it be U.S. President Dalton (Keith Carradine) or Russian Premier Maria Ostrov (Angela Gots)? The tandem refused to comment, but they did say were not going to waste an explosion "on a bystander." When the mystery military guy launched the explosives toward the cars containing Dalton, Elizabeth (Téa Leoni) and Ostrov, it was not immediately clear which vehicle took the brunt of the blast.

Dalton and Ostrov met in Switzerland to talk about the escalating tension between the United States and Russia. The Americans still maintained their stand that the other country should be held liable for the Air Force One incident. They could not divulge that the administration already knew that the Ukrainians were behind it, as it meant a full-blown war. When the peace talks ended, Dalton and Ostrov appeared to have reached an impasse and were preparing for the journey back home. Unfortunately, the unknown man chose that time for his deadly fireworks.

When asked if Ukraine was behind the attack, Hall refused to give a straight answer. Last episode, the country's ambassador told Elizabeth that it was a mistake to sign the negotiations. As the United States refused to heed to his request, it is certainly possible that Ukrainians took matters into their own hands and expressed their disapproval about the pact. As to whether the peace talks still stand after the incident, the series creator just said that Russia would still play a major part in the second half of the season.

"Madam Secretary" will return on Sunday, Jan. 10, 2016, at 8 p.m. EST on CBS.
