'Grey's Anatomy' season 12 spoilers: Izzy returning? Shonda Rhimes shoots down rumors

Weeks back, there were speculations that actress Katherine Heigl could be back in "Grey's Anatomy" as Izzie. This is to formally give closure to her character's relationship with Alex, which they had back in the early seasons of the medical drama. However, series creator Shonda Rhimes isn't up for the idea.

When TV Line's Michael Ausiello asked Rhimes during the Television Critics Association summer tour about the possibility of Heigl's return, she responded in the negative, reportedly not even giving Ausiello a chance to finish the question.

"I'm done with that story. I've turned that idea over in my mind a thousand times and thought about how it would go. And I don't think so," she said.

Thus, there is no hope of seeing Heigl reprise her role in the series.

In other related news, Rhimes hinted at the status of the love lives of former couple Callie and Arizona, and weighed in on the two possibly finding new romance come season 12.

"Arizona obviously does not date men, and Callie's love interest so far this season is a woman," Rhimes told Entertainment Weekly. "I like that we're honoring the fact that her character is bisexual. I feel like her energy right now feels like that's what she's looking for."

Meanwhile, Meredith, who just lost her husband Derek Shepherd in the most shocking revelation in the history of the medical drama, will get a new love interest in the person of the newest doctor in town. Martin Henderson is said to be the new McDreamy that will capture the heart of melancholic surgeon. It remains to be seen how the two will establish that love connection.

"Grey's Anatomy" season 12 premieres on Sept. 24.
