When Gotham Season 3 returns , a familiar character will be played by a new face.

It was reported by The EW that the role of Poison Ivy was recast and actress Clare Foley, who took on the role for the first two seasons, will be replaced by All My Children alum Maggie Geha.

While it was speculated that the older actress replaced Foley to show a progression in the timeline, there will be no time jump featured in the upcoming season.

Executive producer John Stephens explained that the transformation had to happen to establish the future development of Poison Ivy's character in the series.

"Canonically, Ivy is a character who makes use of her seductive powers to get what she wants in the world. Transforming Ivy early in the season allowed us to play to a lot of those abilities that Ivy has, while playing the fun of someone trapped in a body that isn't theirs," he said in an interview with TV Guide.

As Poison Ivy is being set up on her road to become one of Gotham's main villains, the Penguin and Selina Kyle are already way ahead of her.

In the recently concluded Comic Con in San Diego, actors Robin Lord Taylor and Camren Bicondova admitted that they will be exploring a darker side to their character's personalities for the upcoming season.

"The great thing about this season is after last season, having the two people that he loves, in the entire world, taken away from him, he now has full license to go completely psychotic. There's nothing holding him back. That's sort of the overall theme of our show, about love and the loss of love, and to love someone is to be vulnerable," Taylor said.

As for Bicondova, she said that her character has a natural goodness to her but also has the same tendency to become evil. For Season 3, the young Catwoman will explore her darker side.

Gotham Season 3 returns to Fox on September 19.
