The days are passing by fast and this weekend will surely be something to relish as Floyd Mayweather Jr. faces Andre Berto as the former goes for the 49–0 record that will place him on equal footing with boxing great Rocky Marciano.
While Berto was a good fighter some time back, the fact remains that he is an overwhelming underdog against Mayweather. Both have tried profusely to build some hype around the fight but apparently, such is not working.
With the fight not expected to be as lucrative as past Mayweather fights, there will still be some who would be following the match since it is a historic event, win or lose.
On one hand, Mayweather gets the 49–0 record with a win but a lot of attention is expected on what he says after the fight. Mayweather has repeatedly made it known that he will retire and that this will be his final hurrah.
To date, many are not buying it. Many believe that Mayweather will still fight in 2016 regardless of his announcement. So would this make his claim immaterial? As always, the final say will come from the Flamboyant one so don't be surprised one bit.
And at the other side of the fence, can Berto pull off a gigantic upset? Remember that a win by Berto could catapult him instantly to stardom, calling to mind what James "Buster" Douglas did when he shocked the world by defeating Mike Tyson way back in 1990.
So does Berto have that much to do the same?
Some are still left unperturbed, although Berto has nothing to lose by doing so. Such would justify his selection over a phalanx of big name fighters and something that could force Mayweather to rethink retirement.
Of course, betting people would still place their bets on a Mayweather triumph. However, for the ones who have nothing to lose, Berto could have some chance, no matter how meager it may be.
Mayweather vs. Berto will take place on Sept. 12 at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas. It will broadcast live via Showtime pay-per-view (PPV) with the undercard kicking off at 9 p.m. EST.
