Earthquake today in Mexico: 7.2 magnitude quake in Tecpan felt 170 miles away in Mexico City

A 7.2 magnitude has struck southern Mexico's Guerrero state this morning. 

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake occured at 9.27. a.m. local time about 22 miles north-west of Tecpan, Mexico. It occured on the Pacific coast between Acapulco and Zihuatanejo, both resort towns. The dpeth at the epicenter was measured at 15 miles.

The earthquake was felt by residents living 170 miles away from the epicenter in Mexico City. 

The USGS states on its website: "The April 2014 earthquake occurred within the "Guerrero Seismic Gap" – an approximately 200 km long segment of the Cocos-North America plate boundary identified to have experienced no significant earthquakes since 1911 (M 7.6). The plate interface in this region is known to be locked, with an earthquake of M 8.1-8.4 thought possible should the entire gap rupture in a single event."
