The Daleks will make their presence felt early on in "Doctor Who" season 9. These extraterrestrial mutants will terrorize the doctor all across the season, and actor Peter Capaldi's character will be facing massive action and thrill from the start of the new run.

"The opening episode of the new series is fabulous — the story is going to take us across the universe into all types of dark, terrifying and funny places. It's a particularly epic one to start," Capaldi told Mirror

The actor said that there are "some special surprises in store" for the characters in season 9 involving these deadly space robots, who he described as "strangely brutal, nasty little pieces of work." The Daleks first rose to power and threatened the universe back in 1963. Ever since, they have become staple villains in the series.

Season 9 will premiere with an episode called "The Magician's Apprentice." A trailer for the series hints that the Daleks are back for some cosmic destruction. The odd thing is the Time Lord who is capable of bringing them down is nowhere to be found so Missy and Clara make it their responsibility to keep tabs on things while the doctor is apparently out.

The synopsis (as picked up by Zap2it) for the season premiere airing on Sept. 19 is as follows:

"Where is the Doctor? When the skies of Earth are frozen by a mysterious alien force, Clara needs her friend. But where is the Doctor, and what is he hiding from? As past deeds come back to haunt him, old enemies will come face-to-face, and for the Doctor and Clara survival seems impossible."

Head writer and executive producer Steven Moffat said that they will play with "bigger" stories in "Doctor Who" season 9.
