Dell Latitude 12 Rugged Tablet specs and features: designed to withstand extreme conditions

 Dell

Dell, one of the computing industry's biggest names, entered the active lifestyle market by coming out with their Rugged line of computers. However, the first devices for their weather- and activity-proof lineup only included laptops and hybrid computers. This time, Dell is hoping to add to their lineup something a little closer to what consumers want.

Dell U.S. has announced that it will be rolling out the Rugged Tablet, designed to be used by anyone outdoors. Specifically, the tablet is a good partner for those who lead an active lifestyle, be it for fun or as part of their work.

According to Drew Moore, executive director and general manager of the Rugged Mobility lineup for the company, "Dell Rugged devices are critical to many industries including military, emergency response, public safety, industrial work, scientists and even adventurers."

The Rugged lineup, particularly the mobile tablet, was also designed with performance in mind.

Moore added, "It's important for Dell's Latitude Rugged devices to provide superior computing power and the mobile capabilities they require to accomplish their jobs."

The Dell Rugged tablet, also known as the Latitude 12, sports an 11.6-inch Direct-View HD display, which makes the screen readable even under the most extreme conditions outdoors, and the display also allows multi-touch capabilities even if the user's fingers are inside a glove. In addition, to make the tablet sturdier and able to withstand extreme conditions, the Latitude 12 also comes with fifth-gen Intel Core-M processors with QuadCool thermal management features – this means that owners can use the device even through severe temperatures.

At first glance, though, the device seems bulkier than an average tablet – it is. The Latitude 12 measures at least an inch thick and weighs about 3.6 pounds. However, the hulking design gives an advantage when used for activities – the tablet can be used outside even under the most unforgiving conditions like severe rains and extreme heat. Since the device is also IP-6X rated, it can also withstand dust and shocks. According to Dell, the Latitude 12 can even withstand a 4-foot drop and the most challenging hurricane conditions.

The Latitude 12 will be available on Dell's online store at the end of the month.
