Gennady Golovkin's trainer is the latest boxing buff to speak up on the upcoming showdown between Saúl "Canelo" Alvarez and Amir Khan. Like the rest, he doesn't see how Khan can match up against a much bigger Alvarez.
Alvarez and Khan will collide on May 7, a big bout in itself with two popular names on a collision course. The match is a voluntary fight that the World Boxing Council (WBC) allowed before that much hoped for big fight between Alvarez and Golovkin, which could take place later on in the year.
Golovkin will have his own voluntary match against Dominic Wade at the Forum in Inglewood, Los Angeles on April 23.
Abel Sanchez, the trainer of Golovkin, recently weighed in on the chances of the British southpaw but shared nothing different from what others have been saying.
Sanchez believes Khan will be good in the early goings but will eventually succumb to the power and size of the Mexican brawler. Khan faces the daunting task of having to move up by eight pounds, something that critics believe may be too much.
Just the same, Sanchez shared via ES News that the fight is good for Alvarez to build up his stock. Even though Alvarez' popularity has been rising, the trainer believes that selecting Khan over previously mentioned names like Willie Monroe Jr. and Gabriel Rosado was a good move that made his voluntary clash something worth checking out.
Despite the odds stacked against him, Khan is unfazed. He is confident of overwhelming Alvarez and critics, and all that could very well depend on how he acclimatizes himself with the additional pounds.
Also, it will be interesting to see how long Khan can stand up to Alvarez for this one. While he plans to use his speed to the max, the fact remains that Alvarez has been used to being taken to the limit and still look fresh.
Alvarez proved that against Miguel Cotto back in November 2015 which netted him the WBC middleweight title.
