Saúl "Canelo" Alvarez is a rising star and is undoubtedly in the same caliber as Gennady Golovkin, Miguel Cotto, and even the retirement-bound Manny Pacquiao.
In fact, he may be up over some of them, particularly Cotto whom he masterfully defeated in December last year.
Right now, the next man being he needs to conquer is Golovkin. Triple G is the mandatory challenger by the World Boxing Council (WBC), which means that Alvarez will have to face him after his scheduled interim bout this May.
The problem is that there are still some rough edges in negotiations and that has something to do with the catchweight limit that Alvarez is proposing. Learning from his mistake against Floyd Mayweather Jr. before, Alvarez is done adjusting and sacrificing.
But the reality of it all in the middleweight division is that 155 pounds is not the full limit but 160. So in short, the WBC is not expected to heed his request as far as his planned fight with the Kazakh boxer is concerned since 160 pounds is the actual weight where it should be fought.
Alvarez had already reiterated that he will only fight Golovkin at 155 pounds, according to BoxingScene.com, nothing more. So with that in mind and if the mega fight between the two doesn't take place, Alvarez could end up without the title and the eventual loser of it all in the end.
The thing is Alvarez needs to learn to adjust to the weight limits and not the other way around. If he is to set his sights on the greats, he cannot make catchweight limits that favor only him.
There will be exceptions, of course, but the point of it all is that he needs to be flexible and heed to the rules as set forth by the sanctioning body.
In this case, the WBC is not expected to rule in his favor so it may perhaps be best to adjust and test himself rather than resort to a stand-off.
Doing so now means it will be the trend in the future. And if that is the case, all his big fight dreams will remain as that — dreams.
