'Borderlands 3' release date news: rumors of cancellation swirl as Gearbox remains silent

"Borderlands 2" game Steam/Gearbox Software

The hit franchise "Borderlands" had fans clamoring for a third game in the series, and game developer Gearbox has been avoiding the limelight for quite a while now. With this, a lot of fans are intrigued about whether or not the new game will be released by 2017.

According to Game N Guide, Gearbox certainly had their fans hyped for the game as they announced that they will start working on "Borderlands 3" back in April. It has been a few months after the announcement, and fans are starting to worry about the game's development since there have been no updates or sneak peeks at all for the title.

Fans are starting to question whether or not there is progress for "Borderlands 3" since the quietness of the game's developer might mean that the game could have been scrapped for good. When developing a game, most developers will release some teaser trailers at regular intervals in order to ensure that the hype is alive for their titles. With prevalent suspicions that the game getting canceled, fans will surely get disappointed if this rumor is confirmed.

Meanwhile, according to the Christian Post, should the "Borderlands 3" game happen, a new set of characters will become one of the most interesting features of the new game. As fans can remember, Handsome Jack has already been written off in "Borderlands 2," so it will be really interesting to see a new villain.

Another possible character to be featured on the new "Borderlands" game will be Scooter from the "Tales from the Borderlands" game. After all, some rumors say that Gearbox previously hinted at this, but it is still undecided due to his fate in "Tales from the Borderlands."

In any case, it is most likely for the game's protagonists to make a comeback in the "Borderlands 3" game. Some of them might return but with surprising twists. However, with no confirmation yet, fans will have to wait for official updates from Gearbox.
