iPhone trade-in program expands to China

After previously reporting that Apple had expanded its recycling program to cover other devices, the company is now reportedly expanding its reach.

Apple's Reuse and Recycling Program is reportedly now covering China as well, giving Apple owners over there a chance to redeem some credit for their old iPhones and iPads to get Apple's roster of newer devices at a lower price. The original plan covered only iPhones but apparently that has been expanded to cover even tablets as well.

This new development will cover Chinese mainland. Hence, Apple owners residing in Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan can also look forward to trading their old devices in exchange for new and advanced models.

It wasn't mentioned though on what the going rate would be for folks who would trade-in their old devices. The immediate belief is that it will follow the same rule applied to the U.S.

The devices set to be traded in will undergo evaluation by Apple employees using a device checklist before the fair market price is eventually arrived. Though it hasn't been made official, the series of checks will most likely be the same as this one from the UK page for Apple's Reuse and Recycling program though it may vary. The assessment page can be found here.

As far as iPhones are concerned, units which were traded in will be sold to Foxconn. Foxconn will eventually repair and resell the said devices through its websites eFeihu, FLNet and probably Alibaba's Taobao store.

The most likely scenario is that they will eventually refurbish and sell these Apple devices. There is also a chance that they could open trade-in programs as well similar to what Apple is doing but on a lower pricing scale.
