Android Nougat release update: Android 7 coming to Sony Xperia Z devices early next year?

With Google readying the full version of the new Android Nougat platform, some Android users are wondering how quick the new version will be released to their devices. One noted lineup that is compatible with the new platform is the Sony Xperia Z series.

While Sony has not yet announced the list of devices that will get the Android 7.0 update – unlike other tech manufacturers like HTC – it is expected that the top-tier Xperia Z series flagship will get the update first. This is highly possible given that Sony releases a staggered rollout of Android updates starting with the most current flagship iteration.

This means that in the Xperia Z lineup, the Xperia Z5 series will get Android Nougat first, with Sony working downwards from the Xperia Z4 soon after. If the previous Android M rollout is to be a factor, then most of the Xperia Z series lineup will get the next-gen Android N update, with the oldest release being the Xperia Z2. The Sony Xperia Z1 and Z lineups did not get the official Android Marshmallow update.

As to when fans can expect the Android Nougat release on their Sony Xperia Z devices, it is highly possible that they may have to wait until next year, though an early 2017 roll out is likely. Should Google release the full version of Android Nougat next month as reports suggest, the tech giant will first roll out the new version to its extensive Google Nexus lineups. Meanwhile, other tech makers like HTC have also said that they have lined up their products for Android 7.0, so those who are already "ready" for the update will most likely get the ROM towards the end of the year.

Meanwhile, aside from the Xperia Z series, Sony is also expected to roll out Android 7.0 to other company lineups like the Xperia X series. Android Nougat is also compatible for mid-range devices, and with at least two Xperia M lineup iterations getting Android M recently, an Android Nougat update is also possible.
