AMD Radeon Pro SSG GPU specs: new graphics card extremely useful in processing large data sets, beta kits sell for $9999

 AMD

In a bid to blaze the trail for graphics cards, AMD has announced that it will be releasing the Radeon Pro SSG, the first graphic card to incorporate an SSD.

According to a report by The Verge, the Radeon Pro SSG will feature two PCIe 3.0 M.2 slots allowing users to add up to 1TB of NAND flash memory on the graphic card, which would hasten the processing of large datasets since they do not have to be processed separately using system memory.

This is especially useful to industries that need to process a huge amount of datasets such as the medical and scientific communities.

During a demonstration at the Siggraph computer graphics conference, the card performed impressively by the rendering the raw 8K video at 30 frames per second but according to AMD reps, it can perform as high as 90 frames per second.

"One of the most challenging constraints faced by GPU computing applications is the inability to access terabytes of data. Radeon Pro SSG is poised to not only speed-up processing for many applications with very large datasets, but also to enable new application experiences by utilizing data persistence of non-volatile memory. This will be a disruptive advancement for many graphics and compute applications,"Raja Koduri, AMD senior vice president and chief architect, Radeon Technologies Group, in the company's press release.

For his part, Patrick Moorhead, Founder and Principal Analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy explained that the move of AMD can work to the advantage of the industry as a whole in terms of processing datasets.

"Larger local memory on the graphics card can speed-up processing for many applications with very large datasets, and should also allow for results with finer granularity and resolution. This will be a notable advancement for many graphics and compute applications."

The version currently being rolled out is a beta version that sells for $9,999.
