Xiaomi Mi 4 to get Windows 10 update

Xiaomi Mi 4, the current lineup of Mi smart phones Xiaomi

It seems that Mi 4 users will have the chance to check out Windows 10 Mobile for themselves as Xiaomi had announced that an official version for the new mobile platform compatible with the Xiaomi Mi 4 will roll out tomorrow, Dec. 3.

According to a post on the official Xiaomi MiUI forums, Bin Lin, Xiaomi's president, posted on Chinese social media site Weibo an announcement about Windows 10 on Xiaomi Mi 4. Apparently, an official version will be released starting Dec. 3, with the Windows 10 Mobile platform based on an earlier beta build 1058. The post also mentioned that the beta build itself seems stable enough that Xiaomi lost no time at all in building an official version without any glitches and bugs and compatible with the Mi 4.

However, not all Mi 4 owners will get to enjoy the new Windows 10 environment for the device as the new Microsoft mobile platform build will only be rolled out to compatible Xiaomi Mi 4 4G version, with the earlier 3G iteration staying on its own Android-based, MiUI-layered interface.

Earlier this year, Microsoft announced that one of the Redmond-based company's partners in checking out and bringing Windows 10 to mobile devices was China-based Xiaomi. In June, Microsoft even rolled out a test build of the new platform to a select number of Xiaomi Mi 4 for the beta testers to check out the mobile Windows environment before an official version is released.

Meanwhile, the Mi 4 4G variant will join two new Microsoft Lumia phones in having Windows 10 as their platform. The Lumia 950 and 950 XL were released recently to showcase the new Windows 10 environment. The mobile version of the Microsoft platform shares some features with its desktop counterpart, such as Continuum and Cortana support, as well as an integrated and more robust data and device security through Windows Hello.
