WWE rumors: John Cena victory over AJ Styles at Summerslam 2016 a possibility but Styles needs to win more to move arc forward

As WWE gears for Summerslam 2016, there are a ton of matches that fans are waiting to see, but definitely on the top of their list is the faceoff of AJ Styles and John Cena.

This is an interesting match because AJ Styles, being the excellent heel that he is, has already scored one victory over one of the longest reigning faces of the WWE, John Cena.

Of course, the victory was done with the help of AJ's friends Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson on Money in the Bag so the grudge match between the two remain alive for their upcoming match.

Cena, in turn, pinned his nemesis in a six man tag team match in Battleground last month.

According to Heavy, it is likely that Cena will come out the victor of the match to fan the flames of the grudge match storyline.

The site speculated that this will most likely commence in a Smackdown bout via Backlash.

Bleacher Report columnist Donald Wood disagrees, saying that it is actually a bigger deal for AJ Styles to win legitimately over Cena to further cement his standing as the top guy on Smackdown.

Wood further stated that a victory by Styles would be a more interesting trajectory for the franchise as Cena has long been occupying the position.

"Styles needs to look stronger than ever now that Anderson and Gallows have been drafted to Raw and The Club is no longer a united entity. Beating Cena would instantly legitimize Styles to the casual wrestling fan and make him a bona fide top guy overnight. And a top guy is exactly what SmackDown needs right now," he pointed out.

SummerSlam 2016, one of the WWE's biggest annual events is slated to air on August 21 and will feature other big matches between Finn Balor vs. Seth Rollins for the Universal Champship, WWE World Champion Dean Ambrose vs Dolph Ziggler, Roman Reigns vs United States Champion Rusev and Apollo Crews vs Intercontinental Champ The Miz.
